Book: Howl's Moving Castle
Author: Diana Wynne Jones
This is my 27th read for the year
This is the story of Sophie. A young girl who works in a hat shop with her sisters and mother. One day the Witch of the Waste comes into the shop, and Sophie tries to turn her away. What results is a curse that leaves Sophie an old woman. She sets off to try and get the curse reversed and she comes upon Howl's Castle. She shows up and tells him that she is his new cleaning lady - hoping that he will help her break the curse. In Howl's castle lives a young apprentice, Michale, and a Fire Deamon - Calcifer. Getting tangled with this group shows Sophie another side of Howl and of herself and leads her on our path she least expected.
This was a great book. My husband bought me the Folio Society version for Christmas and my eldest daughter and I read it over these last few weeks. She is a lover of Studio Ghibli - who made this book into one of their films. We loved the movie, but it does differ from the book. My daughter and I decided that we liked the book better - the characters fit a little better and made a little more sense. It is a well written book, and heart felt and a fun read. Highly recommend
